Sylhet is a major city that lies on the banks of Surma River in north-east Bangladesh. As of the 2011 census, the city has a population of 479,837. It is surrounded by tea estates, sub-tropical hills, rain forests and river valleys; the region is one of the leading tourist destinations in the country.
Jessore district once belonged to the ancient Janapada kingdom of Samatat Janapada. In the 15th century, Jessore was a part of the kingdom of Pratapaditya. Jessore district was established in 1781. In 1947, Jessore was divided among India and (then) Pakistan. Except for the Bangaon and Gaighata thanas, the district became part of East Bengal.
The city of Saidpur was established around the Saidpur Railway Workshop established in 1870 by the British Colonial regime. Saidpur became Thana in 1915. It is learnt that in the long past there came a Sayed family from Koch Bihar of India and settled in this area and started preaching Islam.
Barisal was a semi-independent area in the Mughal period because of heavy fighting between them and Hindu chiefs. In course of time, it fell under the Bengal Nawabs, the last being Raja Nakuleswar Bose and then colonial British India, later passed to East Pakistan at independence and finally Bangladesh.
